Tazkiyah Beyond Purification
The first intake of Tazkiyah Beyond Purification has been a great success, alhamdulillah. Throughout the program we witnessed sincere engagement, thoughtful discussions, and meaningful growth among the students. As the course progressed, we also received increasing interest from new students eager to benefit from the program.
Since the current intake is now approaching its conclusion, we have decided to relaunch the course for a second intake of students, allowing others the opportunity to begin the journey from the start in a structured and guided manner.
Tazkiyah Beyond Purification is a one-year program designed to provide a comprehensive study of the science of Tazkiyah based on the Qur’an and Sunnah, as understood by the scholars of our tradition. The course combines both theoretical learning and practical application, helping students understand the framework of Tazkiyah and how it shapes a believer’s relationship with Allah, with themselves, and with the world around them.
Following the theoretical portion of the program, students will also benefit from a mentorship phase, where the concepts studied are further explored through guided discussion, reflection, and practical application.
This program is intended for students who are serious about cultivating a deeper understanding of Tazkiyah and applying it in their lives with clarity, balance, and purpose.

TBP Course Details and Structure
TBP Topic Breakdown
(Please note: this is only an initial breakdown. The course content remains flexible depending on the progress of our students, bidhiniAllah)
Session 1: Tazkiyah Beyond Purification: A Lifelong Journey of Iman and Growth
This introductory session establishes the foundation for the entire course, emphasizing that Tazkiyah is not just about theory but a practical, lifelong commitment to transforming the heart and optimizing Iman. It introduces the course structure and the three tracks of growth: knowledge, solutions, and heart work.
Session 2: The Nature of the Soul: Iman, Tazkiyah, and True Transformation | Heart-Centered Change vs. Secular Models
The session focuses on defining Tazkiyah as a holistic process of growth and optimization, contrasting it with secular and incomplete models of psychological or external change. It also delves into the dual nature of the human being (body and soul) and the importance of using Qur'anic language to understand the heart's states.
Session 3: Tazkiyah and the Impact of Our Environment: Protecting the Heart
The session primarily focuses on the Exposure Principle and its profound impact on the heart and Iman, emphasizing how various internal and external factors shape one's spiritual state. It also delves into the continuous nature of Tazkiyah and the importance of balancing personal responsibility with reliance on Allah.
Session 4: Understanding the Nafs: Managing Desires and the Anatomy of the Human Being
This session focuses heavily on the Nafs (the lower self/desires), its relationship with the heart and soul, and how to manage it within an Islamic framework. It contrasts the Islamic model of the human being with secular psychological models and introduces Ibn al-Qayyim’s powerful analogy of managing desires like channeling a river.
Session 5: The Anatomy of the Heart: The Central Processing Unit and Birthplace of Behavior
This session shifts the focus from the Nafs to the Qalb (the Heart), exploring its multifaceted meanings in the Islamic tradition. It introduces the heart as the "central processing unit" and the "birthplace of behavior," while also discussing the Fitrah (innate nature) and how the heart interacts with the Qur'an and its environment.
Session 6: The Activation Principle: How Exposure Awakens the Forces of the Heart
This session introduces the second meaning of the heart as a Divine Vessel (a container that absorbs and accommodates influences) and presents the Activation Principle, explaining how our environment and exposures awaken dormant forces within us. It also emphasizes the difference between collecting knowledge and being transformed by it.
Session 7: The Heart vs. The Brain: Reclaiming the Islamic Concept of 'Aql
This session continues the exploration of the heart, specifically as the Central Processor of human behavior, rejecting the modern secular divide between "heart" and "mind." It also provides a powerful Islamic critique of modern psychological concepts like self-esteem and self-worth, reframing them through the lens of one's standing with Allah.
Session 8: The Heart as the Center of Command: Governance of Behavior and Iman
This session deepens the exploration of the heart's functions, describing it as the Center of Command for human behavior and a Garden that requires active cultivation. It introduces the concept of the heart's "inner sense" (tasting faith) and emphasizes the practical role of Dhikr and Istighfar (especially before Fajr) in maintaining spiritual health.
Session 9: Feelings vs. Emotions: Reclaiming the Heart’s Taste from Modern Psychology
This session explores the "Inner Sensory System," distinguishing between the modern concept of emotions and the Islamic concept of "feelings" or "taste" (dhawq). It explains how feelings serve as a navigation tool for Iman, indicating the health of the heart and its alignment with Allah.
Session 10: Liberation from the Self: Shifting the Heart’s Center to Allah
This session focuses on the "unlearning" of self-centered modern frameworks to embrace an Allah-centered understanding of human nature. It introduces the heart as a "melting pot" that must be cleared of the "sense of self" to find true peace and liberation through Taqwa.
This session talk also about Taqwa and the Purpose of Being: Moving Beyond Trauma-Based Frameworks.
Session 11: The Engine of Iman: How the Heart Produces Belief and Will
This session details how the heart functions as the center of Iman, processing inputs to produce "speech of the heart" (belief) and "actions of the heart" (will). It emphasizes that these two forces are never idle; if not directed toward truth and Tazkiyah, they will inevitably produce corruption and evil.
Session 12: The Prime Model of Tazkiyah: Aligning Beliefs, Intentions, and Actions
This session marks a milestone by introducing the "Prime Model of Tazkiyah," which integrates the tools of Birr (doing good), Taqwa (protection), and Tawbah (cleansing). It provides a structured framework to distinguish between authentic deeds and those corrupted by hidden intentions like social image.
Session 13: Mapping the Heart: A Unified Framework for Spiritual Growth
This session serves as a consolidation point, reviewing the Prime Model and teaching participants how to "map" their lives—categorizing environments, people, and habits based on their spiritual influence. It explains how to discern the internal anatomy of good and evil to prevent being hijacked by external triggers.
This session outlines the Anatomy of Good and Evil: Discerning Clarity in a Complex World
Session 14: Mastering the Nafs: Regulating Desires within the Bounds of Allah
This session focuses on mastering the Nafs (desires and needs), clarifying its role as a source of influence that must be regulated by the heart. It contrasts impulsive, desire-driven behavior with the practice of Sabr (patience), which allows the heart to evaluate actions before proceeding.
Session 15: The Intelligent Opponent: Understanding the Deceptions of the Nafs and Disciplining it for the Sake of Allah
This session explores the deceptive nature of the Nafs and its two fundamental drives: approach (seeking pleasure) and avoidance (fearing pain). It emphasizes that the Nafs is an intelligent opponent that "packages" desires to mislead the heart, requiring constant vigilance and discipline.
Session 16: The Roots of Corruption: Envy, Greed, and the Love of the Dunya
This session delves into the roots of corruption within the Nafs, such as envy, greed, and the love of status, which act like "wolves" unleashed upon one's religion. It introduces Sabr (patience) and Shukr (gratitude) as the primary treatments for restraining the Nafs and anchoring the heart.
Session 17: The Vehicle of Shaytan: How Whispers Manipulate the Nafs
This session explains how Shaytan manipulates the Nafs as a "vehicle" to reach the heart, using whispers to amplify existing desires and fears. It introduces the "Principle of Integration," where all inner forces are unified in a single direction toward Allah to achieve true peace (Sakina).
Session 18: The Downward Spiral: Understanding the Mechanism of Heart Corruption
This session details the "Downward Spiral of Influence," showing how repeated sins amplify the Nafs and give Shaytan more leverage over the heart. It highlights Iman as the only force capable of breaking this cycle by shedding light on Shaytan's deceptions.
Session 19 The Myth of Self-Merit: Cultivating Humility and Reliance on Allah
This session focuses on "Divine Guidance," emphasizing that all good originates from Allah and is placed in the heart through His mercy. It warns against the danger of self-admiration and teaches that true Tazkiyah is recognizing one's total dependence on Allah for every upward movement of Iman.
Session 20: Exposure and Activation: How Our Environment Shapes Our Beliefs
This session prepares participants for the advanced phase by revisiting the "Element Principle"—that all sensory input is either truth (good) or falsehood (evil). It explains how environment and repeated exposure "activate" certain beliefs, making the management of one's "microclimate" a primary strategy for Tazkiyah.
Session 21: Awakening the Native Truth: Why Change is a Restoration, Not a Discovery
This session introduces Fitrah as the original, pure design of the human being, which is "awakened" rather than "installed" by Revelation. It explains that change is easier than we think because truth is native to the heart, while falsehood is a foreign and unstable layer.
Session 22: Challenging Secular Premises: Reclaiming an Allah-Centered Worldview
This session deepens the study of Fitrah as both a "system" (how we process reality) and "content" (primordial truths about Allah). It addresses how modern secular premises can distort our starting assumptions and why the heart must prioritize the love of Allah to remain unified. This session presents Fitrah as the Anchor of Human Stability.
Session 23: The Biggest Secret of Change: Activating the Native Forces of the Soul
This session explores how Fitrah unfolds incrementally through "Layers" and "Occupancy," warning that there is no neutrality in spiritual life. It highlights Ibn Taymiyyah’s insights on how a healthy Fitrah naturally approves of good and disapproves of evil when illuminated by the Qur'an.
Session 24: Beyond Emotions: Reclaiming the Language of the Heart
This session critiques the modern "emotion model" and restores the Islamic language of al-Wajd (what is found within) and Dhawq (taste). It explains that inner states are a "dashboard" for the heart, providing crucial information about one's spiritual health and alignment.
Session 25: Refined Taste: The Diagnostic Mirror of the Heart’s Condition
This session defines "Refined Taste" as the diagnostic sign of a healthy heart, where good feels sweet and evil feels painful. It explains the "Cycle of Good," where Iman refines taste, leading to better Tazkiyah decisions and even stronger Iman.
Session 26: The North Star of the Heart: Love as the Driver of All Action
This session integrates the course's major themes, identifying "Love" as the primary action of the heart that governs all behavior. It introduces the "Currency of Iman" (Profit vs. Loss) as a unifying system for evaluating life choices and ensuring they lead toward Allah.
Session 27 The Front Desk of the Heart: How the Conscious Mind Interfaces with Reality
This session introduces the "Twelve Principles of Tazkiyah" (such as Exposure, Maintenance, and Integration) as a comprehensive framework for growth. It also explains the "Front Desk" mechanism of the conscious mind, which acts as a buffer and interface between the world and the core of the heart.
Session 28: Organizing Life through Tazkiyah: Catalysts for Internal Transformation
This session prepares participants for Ramadan by framing the month as an "experiment of heart occupancy." It emphasizes Dhikr (remembrance) and Du'a (supplication) as the primary entry points for transforming the heart and letting Tazkiyah organize all areas of life.
"A truly transformative course in all respects.I have understood my mission in life, my paradigm about viewing Islam has completely changed, and knowing myself has increased dramatically following taking this course."
"The Tazkiyah Beyond Purification Programme was the best gift from Al Wahhab for transforming my heart. This programme has deepened and enriched my understanding of the Nafs and heart, and the role of Shaitaan within this mechanism. It’s made me realise every waking moment exposes my heart and I shouldn’t take what I let in lightly. It’s put me on the right path with the right focus avoiding the pitfalls of fragmenting Islamic concepts and emphasising optimising Iman. We’re not meant to live this life trying to wing it on our own; we’re meant to live it depending on Allah at every step until we reach our final destination In Shaa Allah. There is a lot more I would like to add but words cannot do justice to the benefits this program has brought to my life, by the grace and fadl of Allah. Alhamdulillah.."
"Tazkiyah: Beyond Purification is a course that has been completely transformative for me. I am a counsellor and mother of 2 children, and it has been the missing piece of the puzzle for both my professional practice and my journey as a parent. I'm not even sure how I have gone on this long in my life without truly understanding the anatomy of the heart and how the heart shapes every action and decision that we make. Subhanallah, a sister encouraged me to take this course and I am forever grateful to her for insisting that I embark on this journey. I hope all my Muslim brothers and sisters do this. If you practice what you learn it can completely change the tone of your life and your family for the better, by the permission of Allah."
"
Taking the course “Tazkiyah Beyond Purification” has been a deeply meaningful experience for me. It encouraged me to pause and honestly reflect on my life and the condition of my heart. Before this course, I often thought of purification mainly as improving my outward actions and avoiding mistakes. Through the lessons and reflections in this course, I came to realize that true tazkiyah is much deeper than that. It is about working on the heart, being aware of our intentions, and constantly turning back to Allah in every stage of life. One of the most important changes I experienced is in my relationship with Allah. I have become more aware that Allah is always near and fully aware of what is inside my heart. Even the thoughts, worries, and struggles that I cannot share with anyone else are known to Him. Reflecting on His Divine Names helped me understand that my entire life is within His knowledge and wisdom. This realization brought both humility and comfort. My prayers and remembrance of Allah now feel more conscious, because I try to remind myself that I am turning to the One who truly knows me and understands my struggles. This course also changed how I look at life and its challenges. Before, when difficulties appeared, I would often feel overwhelmed and question why things were happening the way they were. Through the reflections in this course, I began to see challenges in a different way. I started to understand that difficulties can be part of Allah’s wisdom and a means through which a person grows and becomes closer to Him. Instead of reacting immediately with frustration or sadness, I try to pause, reflect, and remind myself that every situation carries a lesson and an opportunity to strengthen my trust in Allah. Another important impact of this course is that it helped me become more aware of my inner state. I began to pay closer attention to my intentions, my reactions, and the influence of my nafs. It made me realize that the real work of purification happens inside the heart. This awareness encourages me to reflect more often, ask Allah for forgiveness, and renew my intentions in the things I do. It reminded me that purification is not something that happens once, but something that requires continuous effort and sincerity. Overall, this course felt like a moment of awakening and realignment in my life. It encouraged me to slow down and reflect on the true purpose of my journey in this world. It reminded me that life is not only about fulfilling worldly expectations, but about preparing the heart to return to Allah with sincerity and humility. The greatest value this course added to my life is a deeper sense of clarity and inner strength. It helped me understand that even when life feels uncertain or difficult, there is peace in turning back to Allah and trusting His wisdom. Knowing that He is aware of every struggle, every effort, and even every silent prayer brings comfort and reassurance. Through this course, I feel more motivated to continue working on my heart and to approach life with greater patience, reflection, and trust in Allah. It reminded me that tazkiyah is a lifelong journey of refining the heart and continually returning to the One who created it and knows it better than anyone else.."
"Even after years of learning with Rashidoon, Sh Moutasem's course Tazkiyah Beyond Purification continues to increase my understanding and highlight avenues to build my relationship with Allahu Subhanahu wa ta'ala. This course has been phenomenal--ma sha Allah ta barak Allah--in developing a deeper awareness of my heart, its function, what feeds into it and what contributes to its health or sickness. This has opened insight allowing me to cut through the noise and identify leverage points I can lean into, weaknessess that require strengthening, and poisons that need eradicating as I work on my heart and seek to strengthen my iman. It helped me to identify areas of resistance that require more focused attention, so that I can continue my journey better aligned with my purpose as a slave of Allah and making my heart for Him alone. The new perspective this course gives to approach daily life and live intentionally engaged with the purpose of my creation reminds me of the reactions I've seen of people who are color blind when they put on corrective glasses that open the world of color to them--everything looks different and carries new subtle meanings--meanings that go far beyond this moment in dunya. And I see that what I have learned here has become embedded in me as beliefs that are helping me focus in on the akhirah and work more pointedly towards my meeting with Allah--and it is from Him Alone that we are granted success."
"I am more conscious about the spiritual implications of the things I do, being aware of spiritual currency. I measure my focus in salah and consider as a significanc that can’t be overlooked. I know Allah must be in our core focus in our journey of life and not peripheral vision of our lives. I have to make a significant change in my life coaching business because of increased consciousness of my deeds."
