Lesson 2: The 12 Key Principles of Tazkiyah
1. The Exposure Principle – The heart is affected by what it is exposed to. Duration and intensity matter. Good exposure leads to growth, while bad exposure leads to corruption.
2. The Element Principle – The heart is a pure element that interacts with external elements (good, neutral, or evil). Our task is to nurture and guard it.
3. The Maintenance Principle – Iman wears out, and the heart gets rusty. Continuous effort and striving are necessary to keep it strong.
4. The Personal Responsibility Principle – No one else can do Tazkiyah for you. You are fully responsible for the state of your heart.
5. The Activation Principle – Certain elements within us are dormant and can be activated by our environment and choices. We must be careful about what we activate.
6. The Surrender Principle – We must trust Allah and surrender to His will, without demanding control over outcomes. Tazkiyah requires patience and reliance on Allah.
7. The Integration Principle – All forces within a person must be aligned towards Allah. Tazkiyah is about harmonizing all aspects of oneself to serve Him.
8. The Progression Principle – Growth in Tazkiyah is a journey, not a one-time switch. The more effort you put in, the more you will grow.
9. The Cycle Principle – Iman naturally fluctuates. Lows are part of the process and allow appreciation of the highs. Accept the cycles and keep striving.
10. The Layers Principle – Growth happens in layers. Each stage blinds you to the next until you push beyond your comfort zone to break through.
11. The Infusion Principle – Worship should permeate daily life. As Tazkiyah develops, everything—work, family, social life—becomes infused with the pursuit of Allah.
12. The Occupancy/Capacity Principle – The heart cannot be filled with both light and darkness. What occupies the heart determines its state.
These principles provide a strong framework for understanding and practicing Tazkiyah as a process of Iman growth rather than just purification.
